Founded in 1856 by Dominick Edward Blake, Blakes now has more than 550 lawyers in offices in Montréal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, New York, Chicago, London and Beijing.

Blakes is an advisory member of TechLaw Group, Inc., an international network of 17 law firms in 30 countries, whose primary mission is to advance clients' interests in all areas of technology-related business. Blakes is also a member of the China Alliance, an arrangement with three leading independent U.S. law firms with growing practices in China's business and regulatory centres.
The Firm's 2007 annual review was recently published and has a new title, Perspective, which focuses on key points of interest: from trends and practice area highlights to pro bono and equity and diversity. In 2006, Blakes celebrated its 150th anniversary and published a special edition of its annual review, highlighting the history of the Firm.
For the first half of 2008, Blakes ranked as the number one law firm for Canadian announced transactions, based on deal count, in the Bloomberg, Thomson Financial and mergermarket M&A league tables. Blakes also won many awards in 2008.
